Change Is Happening!

We are grassroots volunteers in the San Fernando Valley, Simi Valley, Santa Clarita Valley, Conejo Valley and beyond, who helped elect and re-elect Barack Obama the 44th President of the United States and who are now actively supporting his efforts to lead America. We are working for change through community service events and grassroots political events as part of Organizing for Action, with our goals for 2013 to support our President on key legislative issues ranging from gun control to sequestration, from immigration reform to climate change, and more. Yes we can!

Volunteer Events: Together--Yes We Can!

Dear (Contact First Name),

Last week was a traumatic week, starting and ending with the events in Boston, and highlighted in the middle by a shameful 54-46 vote in the US Senate on universal background checks for gun purchases, a reform supported by more than 90% of Americans. Votes on an assault weapons ban and limiting the size of magazine clips failed even worse. Republicans insisted on following filibuster rules in the Senate that require 60 votes to pass legislation; we got a majority vote, which is what our Constitution requires, but democracy failed due to the filibuster.

As pointed out by Chris Hayes on MSNBC, since 1970 there have been about 3,400 deaths from terrorism, foreign and domestic, in the US, in comparison to more than 900,000 deaths from gun violence since 1980. While Congress has even had us go to war to prevent more deaths by terrorism, our elected representatives in Washington, DC are so cowed by the NRA (its money, its vocal activists, and its threats of being election-primary'ed), that not even a watered-down background check law can pass.

The President called the votes 'pretty shameful,' echoing the cry of 'Shame on you!' heard in the gallery immediately after the vote.

We're not giving up on gun violence prevention. Organizing for Action is in this for the long haul and determined to change gun laws in this country. As another gun control group has said: "Change the vote in Congress - or change the Congress."

While OFA and its allies on gun violence prevention regroup, OFA will work another of its legislative objectives: comprehensive immigration reform.
